| Abstract | "This article is based on an edited summary report of a roundtable discussion held in December 1997. The participants included a high- ranking delegation from Belarus and representatives of the School of Slavonic and East European Studies (SSEES) and the Study Group on Education in Russia, the Independent States and Eastern Europe SGERISEE)." The first part of the report gives an general overview on recent reforms in Belarus. Further issues discussed there were the language problem, quality assurance in education, problems of funding, the growth of private higher education, postgraduate retraining, in-service training and distance education, and the question of youth organizations.
